It all started while walking around the mall one day. I snapped a picture of this Anthropologie window display thinking it would make a great quilt.
After sketching and experimenting, that idea turned into this! Meet The Whirlpool!
This is completely machine pieced. I quilted it using a flame-like design with matching threads. As per my usual, I used Art Gallery Pure Elements. I think it's about time I get a wholesale account and just buy a bolt of each color...
The stitching from the back.
This guy actually replaced the Pixelated Color Wheel in my living room and now hangs above our piano.
I had so much fun piecing this. I was absolutely thrilled when my idea came out better than I ever imagined. If you missed out on Sew South, join me at The Small Town Quilt Show in Midway, Utah this June. I'll be teaching another Improv Quilting class! As part of the class, I'll be discussing the method I used to create this piece!
WOW!!! That is a eye catcher, I love the whirlpool effect of the piece, great job.

ReplyDeleteOh Kati, this is soooo fabulous!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteStunning!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love!
ReplyDeleteLove the colors. Both the brights and the use of different neutrals in the background.
Love the quilting. Great job! It's so cool you could even hang it backwards.
Love the design, piecing and the size and spread of the rounds. Really striking. I am going to second Debbie's request to see a bit of the process. I think I can figure out how you did it, but I would like to know more. You know, whenever you have a couple of "free" hours to take pictures and write it up. Humm.... Never mind, go on a walk with the kidos and enjoy spring. :) And know there are people out there who are inspired by and love your quilts.
What a fun quilt! Great colors, and layout and quilting!
ReplyDeleteStunning quilt!! Love the colors and the movement it has. Would look great as a backdrop for a TV commercial. Now you just have to think of what the product to sell that would enhance the backdrop!! lol
ReplyDeleteSimply WOW!
ReplyDeleteYou're amazing and just keep getting better. I just love this one!
ReplyDeleteLove both the inspiration and the final result!
ReplyDeleteThis is way cool! Most amazing quilt I've seen all month!!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely Awesome! Love everything about it, Kati!
ReplyDeleteWOW! So Amazing!
ReplyDeleteBig WOW from me, too - I saw snippets of this on the sew south instagrams but I am so happy to see these photos of it up close. The quilting, the piecing, the colours, everything is just marvelous, Kati!
ReplyDeleteStunning! I love the colour palette, the quilting (the back looks amazing!) and how it looks on your chair. What a talented designer you are!
ReplyDeleteAmazing and the quilting on the back is fab!
ReplyDeleteWow. That is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful quilt, and it's great to see what inspired you. My interpretation of that store window wouldn't have looked at all like what you did. But it's great, especially your quilting. It's always good to see how quilters are quilting their own quilts. Makes 'ya proud, doesn't it? And rightly so!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous quilt! Love how the quilting turned out on the back.
ReplyDeleteKati- this quilt is amazing. I'm so excited that I got to see it in person last weekend.
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt!!! So nice that it is hanging in your house for all to enjoy.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful work Kati! I love the cool transparent effect on the back! Besides the gorgeous colors :)))
ReplyDeleteAmazing quilt!! I love every inch of it...especially love how the back came out!!

ReplyDeleteYour inspiring, exciting, wonderful, I run out of superlatives, piece makes me want to try this style NOW. I live in England and sadly too far away to attend one of your tutorials, so like Debbie and Leila I would love to be able to buy a book or online tutorial.
