I've been working on this project the past week.
I was planning to keep it secret until it was finished, but after laying it out on my table this morning, I just had to share it. The process of creating this quilt has been a lot of fun.
I'll discuss the paper piecing aspect in a later post, but for now, here is the progress of my giant paper pieced star quilt. These diamonds are 14" across from one side to the other, which makes them about 35" tall from point to point. I drew all eight templates by hand. The skinniest pieced strips are just 1/4". I think this might be one of my favorite quilts I've made. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that all those lines match up when I sew them together.
This quilt was inspired by block 4424 (All American Star) from 5500 Quilt Block Designs. The hubs gave this book to me for Christmas, and I love it. It's so fun to browse through for ideas. This block caught my eye as I was looking through the book because I've made a similar block twice before for bee blocks from this tutorial on Six White Horses. While making those blocks I hadn't even considered super-sizing it, but it's working out really well. The quilt will be about 75" square when I'm done unless I decide to add borders and make it a queen.
You never cease to amaze me, Kati! This is stunning!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you decided to share! This is a very lovely project - and gorgeous fabrics! Can't wait to see it finished! xx
ReplyDeleteThat is just beautiful :)
ReplyDeleteIs it possible to make a straight 1/4"-wide strip without paper piecing? I haven't tried, but I've got an idea for a quilt that would have TONS of 1/4" strips but I'm worried regular piecing might not look straight enough.
Wow! So gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome.

ReplyDeleteFun thing: I had the same idea to enlarge the original block, but have not gotten to it yet... And then you enter the stage and make an awesome interpretation of that idea. Thank you!

ReplyDeleteI don't often comment (I'm a seasoned lurker) but I have to tell you that this is absolutely stunning and inspiring. I've had a stack of the JD Heirloom sitting on my shelf waiting to be the perfect quilt, and I might just have found it! Thanks for the idea. So thankful for all the bloggers who give this un-creative engineer some mojo! (Upside of being an engineer is that I can make my paper-pieced templates in AutoCad and plot them, LOL)
