Somewhere between the car, Sephora, Sears and back to the car, we lost Little Dude's blankie yesterday. This was a very BIG deal. He has been sleeping with this blankie since he was about 9 months old. The twins are pushing three now. That blankie has had lots of love. We didn't notice it until nap time. I frantically searched, but knew we hadn't made it home with Blankie. Poor Little Dude looked so sad going to bed without his beloved Blankie. He just kept saying, "Blankie all gone," over and over. I wanted to cry for him.
After nap time we set out on a mission to find Blankie. This time with Miss C in tow. There I am dragging all three kids to the mall right before dinner searching the halls for Blankie. We made it to the Mall Office at 4:59 p.m. hoping to find it in Lost and Found. The office "closed" at 5:00, but it was locked and dark. I really almost started to cry at that point. The we started our search of Sears. We had several employees searching along with us, but never found Blankie. Next, onto Sephora. We struck out again. By this time the kids were whining, tired and hungry. Miss C was throwing multiple tantrums because I kept telling her we weren't going to buy anything. Then we walked past that blasted Build a Bear, and it about did us in. That's when she started screaming. It was classic--frazzled mom and screaming kids. Just like all those moms you would see before you had kids and say, "I'll never be like that when I have kids." That was me yesterday.
I practically had to drag Miss C out of Build a Bear and out to the car. Once everyone was strapped down--still screaming of course, I made a very irrational choice. I decided since we didn't find Blankie we had to make a new one right now which required a trip to Jo-Ann's--once again with all kids in tow. By this point it's almost 6:00 p.m. Thank goodness Jo-Ann's still carries the cuddle fabric and flannel backed satin I made Blankie from originally. As soon as Little Dude saw me put the fabric in the cart he immediately yelled, "Blankie!!" There was no line at the cut table, and Little Dude started cuddling the fabric the second we got it cut.
We hurried home and popped a frozen pizza in the oven because of course no dinner had been made during this whole excursion. I threw the kids in their pjs, turned on Micky Mouse Clubhouse and rushed downstairs to make a replacement Blankie. In one 23-minute Micky Mouse Clubhouse, I frantically made one new Blankie. Talk about sewing in crisis.
I was just cutting threads as I heard the kids calling that Micky Mouse was over. I walked up the stairs holding the replacement Blankie, and I did cry when I saw how happy Little Dude was as he exclaimed, "Another Blankie!"
Sometimes it just hits me how much I love sewing the little things for my kiddos. Big quilts are fun and challenging, but it seems the little things I sew always mean the most.
My replacement was accepted and cuddled all night long.
awww, bless the little lad! So glad he was happy to accept a new one, and well done!!!
ReplyDeleteWe have had blankie tragedies at our house too. Glad you found a suitable replacement . . . he looks very happy.
ReplyDeleteWe lost my son's Blankie when he was 3 years old; I can definitely sympathize with your pain! One of the best pieces of advise for new parents: give your kid "lovies" in identical pairs :) That way they'll wear out at the same rate too.
ReplyDeleteWhat sweet smiles. Way to go, Mom! (My twins were the last of 5...I've had plenty of those days! Hugs!)
ReplyDeleteOh! I don't know you (just started following) or Little Dude but your story made me teary. Hugs to you and your little people! And although it may sound trite...thanks for sharing! Toni
ReplyDeleteWay to go, Mom! ^5! Your kiddos will remember and treasure all those "little things" you do, too.
ReplyDeleteAw... What a great story!! You had me laughing and pouting for your baby boy all in a matter of a few paragraphs! He looks so happy now! Yea mom!!!
ReplyDeleteYou are a good mom :) When I was little my blankey was left in a hotel (found by a housekeeper and mailed to us) and at an indoor soccer arena--My mom had to go pick it up and it was behind the bar on a different level. She still talks about how shameful it was to get her little girl's blanket from a BAR. Now, blankey lives at home in a safe place and doesn't travel. Too scary.
ReplyDeleteOh, I can sympathize! My 4-year-old is SUPER attached to his blankie (which I made). We've never lost it for good, but we've had too many close calls. You're such a sweet mom to make him a new one (even at the expense of your sanity!).
ReplyDeletewarms my heart... :)
ReplyDeleteand thanks for the "shout-out!"
ReplyDeleteOh - this one tugged my heart. My twins will be 4 on the 11th and if we lost their blankies it would be earth-shattering. The pics of Little Dude with his new blankie are completely heart-warming! What a dedicated mama you are!
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet story!
ReplyDeleteI love the photos of little Dude in his sleeper, with new blankie -- priceless!
Oh, this is so sweet. Great job, mommy. : )
ReplyDeleteWe don't leave the house with special blankie very often, but by the time we realized that one of them was special, it was of course too late to buy the specific print from Target and I can't find the fabric anywhere. Although the last week or so he's liked both of his knit-jersey blankets, so maybe we'll get away with swapping them out (hopefully never having to buy two).
ReplyDeleteI meant bring two! That's just beyond what I want to deal with.
ReplyDeleteOH my gosh--this story brought tears to my eyes! I am so glad you were able to find the fabrics and make a replacement! I know how loved those items can be.
ReplyDeleteMy nephew has a bear that he has loved since he was a newborn. We have all searched high and low to find another one like it--to have just in case!
Aww, yay for truly satisfied customers, poor Little Dude and you, what trauma!
ReplyDeleteAwww, you get my SuperMom award for the year! :))
ReplyDeletewhat a fun and sweet and at the same time stressful story. I so feel for you, my kids are all at school now, but it was me a few years ago trying to find a darn frog that my oldest left somewhere at the store. We found the frog, she's 12 now and still keeps it in her bed, claiming she does not really need it, it's just there for decoration.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like my life. I left a $150 stroller on the sidewalk for two days only to find it still there. At least his lovie was replaceable!!
ReplyDeleteMy son (28!) was very attatched to his blankie too. My daughter too. She got brave and decided she was done with what was then a rag. She put it in the trash. Her decision, not mine. That night she fell and really hurt her mouth...I dug that blanket out of the trash! My son used to sit by the washer when his blanket was in the wash...he would just wait until it was done, and then have to wait until it was dry!
ReplyDeleteAhhh, you have me crying just reading this sweet story. You are a good mama. I love the last 2 pictures, just precious. Now hang on to blankie. (grin)
ReplyDeleteAw! Poor little guy and poor you! Blankies are special things. Glad you were able to help him out! ;0)
ReplyDeletewoops...that above comment is from me!
ReplyDeleteI feel that shopping pain, frequently, and my girls are 5!
ReplyDeleteSo glad for the happy ending xxx
... and in the middle of all this you're organising a swap for us?!?!
ReplyDeleteWell, I think you handled a tricky situation wonderfully, AND I'm sure I'm not the only one here who is also very grateful for your swap organising generosity!
I love this story. It is so sweet and you are lucky JoAnn's still had the fabric. Little Dude looks like a little sweetheart.
ReplyDeleteBEST MOM IN THE WORLD!!! My child would lose her mind (no joke) if we lost "soft blue blank". I shudder to even think.
ReplyDeleteAww how sweeet, Little Dude is so lucky to have such a great mum!!
ReplyDeleteI thought the smile on his face after he received the new blankie was enough but the those last two pictures? Priceless and Awwwwww!!!!
ReplyDeleteO.k. you win the "Mom of the Week" award and the "Dedicated Parent Medal" for survival under extreme battle conditions (three tired kids in a mall in the afternoon and a super fast evening of sewing). I salute you!
You're a rock star mommy ya know. Don't ever let yourself thing otherwise
ReplyDeletesuper mom to the rescue! ♥
ReplyDeleteawwww.....poor little guy! Glad you were able to make a replacement! We once left my son's beloved elephant at my parent's house (3 hours away) and didn't realize until we were home. The two nights he didn't have it were awful!
ReplyDeleteKati! Those last few photos? I...think there's a speck of dust in my eye. Yeah, that's it.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a crazy harrowing day - one that ended in the very best way!
ReplyDeleteYou just won mom of the year!
ReplyDeleteWay to go awesome Mom!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome;)
ReplyDeleteWhat lucky kids. If one of ours were in that situation it would just be sorry Charlie for them. How amazing you can bust out a blanket in one episode of MMCH. If I were that quick maybe I'd finish a project or two!
ReplyDeleteWell done you! We lost my eldest's flopsy rabbit at the local library and spent the entire night listening to he sobbing for her rabbit when she was 2. Needless to say we were there waiting at the doors well before opening time!
ReplyDeleteOh Kati, my heart goes out to you and your munchkin! I'm 30 years old and still have my baby pillow! And I may or may not still sleep with it. Good mommy for whipping up a new one in a flash! :)
ReplyDeleteOne of those precious (though chaotic!) mama moments to treasure...
ReplyDeleteThis is the best story! I love it and I love the happy ending!
ReplyDeleteSuch a cutie! :)
That last picture is just priceless. So glad you were able to replace it.
ReplyDeleteWe had a similar story with our oldest. I learned my lesson and made two identical for our youngest. She is now down to one..... to make a long story short!! So glad it all worked out-- Yay for mammas!!!
ReplyDeleteSo sweet! Make a backup now. :)
ReplyDeleteI made blankies for both of my kids and made two because 1. I remember when my brother lost his and was distraught and 2. I wanted to be able to switch them out for washings without any drama.
There you go! You've done it! I am crying ;-) You really are a Supermom!
ReplyDeleteI am 31 years old and my Teddy Bear is exactly one year younger. He would be one of the few things I'd try to rescue from a fire (only if everybody else was safe of course!)
I try not to judge moms in the mall cause I know my day will come ;-)
You are the best mom ever! So glad he accepted the new blankie and things are now back to "normal" for you. Thanks for sharing the pictures, he is just adorable!
ReplyDeleteAww, that's so sweet. I'm glad you were able to make another one! Love those pics of the happy guy!
ReplyDeleteSooooo sweet!
ReplyDeleteMom to the rescue! That last picture just melts my heart :-) So glad little dude now has a replacement for his beloved blankie!
ReplyDeleteLove this story (well the ending!). So sweet. Your little guy is adorable.
