The World of Goo--Finished!

I finished this guy up last night.  I did a couple more blocks of quilting during nap time and put the binding on after all the monkeys went to bed.  It's so satisfying to finish a big project like this.  This one was a lot of fun because it's unique.  My original idea came from Jacquie's not lost in the woods quilt from Tallgrass Prairie Studio. I gained my love of wonky log cabins from her blog.  It's such a great block because no two will ever look the same.

For those who missed it, this quilt got its name during the design process when my husband mentioned it looked similar to the video game World of Goo.  The name just stuck.  This quilt is 60" x 80" finished.  The fabrics are all Kona solids--white, black, coal, ash, and cactus.

On a side note, I took these pictures this morning while my kids were eating breakfast.  It was 3 degrees.  This was my fastest quilt photo session ever.  I'm sure my new neighbor thought I was crazy.

I loosely followed the design of the blocks while quilting.  There are approximately two rows of quilting on each border of the blocks.  I think I turned this quilt 8000 times during the quilting process.  That's why it took so much time to quilt, but I think it was worth it.

The back was lots of fun. I used all my scraps leftover from the front.  I pretty much just sewed pieces together then cut them apart randomly, rotated them and sewed them back together again.  I repeated this multiple times until I was satisfied with the result.

I'm entering this quilt into AnneMarie's contest on Gen X Quilters.

It looks really amazing!!! Both sides. And I'm so impressed that you chose to quilt it the way that you did! I can't imagine turning a quilt that size that often, but you are right. It was worth it!

Your quilt is just wonderful. I have so enjoyed watching it come together through the photos and blog posts.
And I just love the back! It is as fabulous as the front!

I can't tell you how much I love this quilt. It is fantastic! Love your color choices. Love how the quilting shows up on the back. It's just incredibly cool!

I have one question. Did you cut your thread after quilting each square? If so, what did you do with all of those ends?

I bet you have some serious muscles after all of that turning!

Okay, I'll stop gushing now :)

I adore this quilt. I covet it. I know it will be a while before I can make anything close to this. I think that makes me want it even more.

I'm not a fan of grey and I'm not a fan of yellow, but somehow these colours together make me feel like a child reaching for a lollipop.

It is absolutely gorgeous. I do have to say my favourite pictures is the one with it on the chair in the snow. It looks like something I would do, if I was brave enough to do photos out in the snow and cold we are having.

Gorgeous! So worth the time and effort. I too wonder what my neighbors must think about me artfully draping quilts & such over bushes, fences, and snowbanks. I've been known to do the same at work (college campus) when I know that my window of opportunity for natural light will be long gone by the time I get home from work.

Oh. My. Lanta. This is absolutely gorgeous. GORGEOUS. I bow to your willingness (and ability) to turn pivot your quilt under the needle that many times but it most certainly was the right choice - that quilting is perfect.

Love love love it.

Very striking. Love the back too.

Needs to go on a wall in an art gallery -- or hanging from the ceiling so everyone can see the back, too.

Awesome! I love both the front and the back!

Your quilting is perfect - I don't think I would have had the energy to do all those squares, but that was just the right choice!

It is great to watch a quilt grow up. It is stunning but I couln't help but chuckle at the thought of how many times you had to turn it during the quilting process.

So so nice. The shapes are reminiscent of Hundertwasser's art. Have you heard of him? I'm falling more and more in love with quilting seeing something so neat as this. Great job!
