I put together pages for all my finished 2009 and 2010 quilts. The tabs for the links are at the top of my blog. I was really surprised when I put them together and looked back over what I have finished this year. I really can't believe I actually finished 18 (Edit: 19--I found another one I forgot to list) quilts this year. I'm not sure where I found the time. One recent commenter mentioned I should do a post about my time management because 18 quilts is pretty astounding. I agree, and I'm not sure how I did it. (Although, I think it's just plain crazy that I have made this many quilts. I often ask myself, "Why am I starting a new quilt?" It really is an addiction.)
I used Ashley's idea from Film in the Fridge for this quilt. I loved her lattice quilt she posted earlier this year. I chose not to paper piece this guy though. I used a jelly roll of Origins by Basic Grey for the center strips. I cut each jelly roll strip into 4 pieces (10" each). I then pieced 4" tall 90-degree triangles on either side of the strip, just eyeballing it to make sure they were centered with each other. Then I squared it up to a 6.5" square. (I will post a tutorial with pictures to better explain this, but probably not until January). It actually came together relatively quick. I arranged the blocks randomly rather than attempting a pattern. The layout is 10 blocks x 12 blocks. It measures about 60x72.
I only quilted the white space doing a dense loopy free-motion stitch. I used a thin loopy stitch to travel between sections. I was a bit afraid of how it would shrink up, but it turned out really well. No super weird puckering.
I used brown flannel for the back and a 10" tall strip of left over pieces. I used almost the entire jelly roll. I love it when that happens. It's always satisfying to use up exactly what you bought.
This photo is overexposed to better show the quilting detail. The brown color of the flannel is truer in the previous picture.
Now my design wall is cleaned off. I spent time organizing my space last night and putting things away. After going through my fabric and organizing things, I still have no new ideas so I want to hear yours. What is on your list for next year? Post links for tutorials, flickr pics, any ideas you have planned for future projects. I'm looking for inspiration.
I just love it!
ReplyDeleteKati, I absolutely LOVE how this came together. Your quilting design *really* makes it special. The loopy quilting made me think immediately of Tula Pink's Nest birds. Love.
ReplyDeleteI've got an ongoing list of tutes that I want to try -- projects I call WIMM (works in my mind) because they're pre-WIP status. I have a little list in my blog sidebar.
Holy moly, I adore the quilting design!!! This quilt came out just beautifully, I just love it. And 18 quilts? Wow, that's just amazing. Definitely need to share your time management secrets!
ReplyDeleteAs for next year's projects, one of the things at the top of my list is a postage stamp quilt. I've actually got a list going of things I want to do or try next year and I'm planning on hosting a linky next Monday all about plans for next year, so check it out!
This is beautiful in it's simplicity! And it looks like something I could actually do. I had to read how you did it several times to make it make sense in my tiny brain, then I had that 'aha!' moment and it all made sense! Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt! I like the back just as much as the front.
ReplyDeleteI love the simplicity in the design.
ReplyDeleteI'm tacking the cathedral block as soon as my Christmas projects are done. I'm debating between pillows and a tablerunner. I might do both if I like the process.
I just found your blog from the SMS Giveaway and added you to my reader. I'd love to see a post on your time management. I also have one-year old twins (identical boys) and haven't found the time to cut my fabric for their quilts, nevermind make 18 in one year! I'd also love to see your lattice quilt tutorial.
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question, my boys quilts are Kate Conklin's Charm Bracelets using charm squares from Lily & Will by Bunny Hill Designs by Moda. And then I want to make Oh Fransson's Planetarium Quilt for my DH and I for our master bed for our fifth anniversary in April.
Beautiful quilt! I love the quilting. I think a lattice quilt just might have to be on the top of my 2011 list! :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! Great work. I have an Origins Layer cake and now I really want to use it! This is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteThe lattice quilt that Film in the Fridge made also caught my eye...I'm hoping to make one in the future. And I'm hoping that mine turns out half as beautiful as yours. The colors are fabulous and I love, love, love the quilting. What a fabulous idea!
ReplyDeleteWow! This quilt turned out great. Another pattern I want to try!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I don't have any fresh ideas for you, I have 5 quilts on the go at the moment (and probably about 10 more from books and magazines I want to make) so have promised myself not to add to the "to quilt" list until I get them done. Hope you find some great inspiration!
ReplyDeleteWow! And I loved looking at the 2010 quilts, they are awesome!
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful quilts. You could tell everyone that you don't have tv in your home. That could explain, at least a little, how you were able to accomplish so much.
ReplyDeleteWowsers! Beautiful quilt. The lattice is so striking and the quilting is gorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteSuch an awesome quilt! Nice job.
ReplyDelete(And I think 18 is a perfectly reasonable number of quilts to make in a year :)
Gorgeous! Congrats on the 18 quilts too - that's great!
ReplyDeleteStunning. Love it!! Love the colors, so fresh. Thanks for linking up :) Off to check out all your wonderful finishes that I may have missed!!
ReplyDeleteThis is really great. I have some of this same line to do a quilt for my mom for her birthday in Jan. I was thinking of doing a quilt from Camille's book but after seeing this now I'm just not so sure. This looks great.
ReplyDeleteI really love this quilt! Are you still going to do a tutorial for this? I know you explained it pretty well above, but I'm wondering an easy way to cut the white triangles. I'm going to make one of these for a donation. (another raffle to benefit a friend's preschool) Anyway, I have a jelly roll and I need to make this!! Just want an easy way to cut the white. I really don't want to paper piece, so this is perfect!
