Square Wheels

I have a new nephew on the way.  I admit I have been seriously intimated about this quilt and have certainly dragged my feet on it.  I wanted to make this new little guy a quilt, but my SIL is a fabulous seamstress as well as a HomeEc teacher.  She does things like make commissioned wedding dresses and over-the-top pirate costumes in her spare time.  My one consolation is that she doesn't make quilts.

I bought this fabric (Wheels by Riley Blake) a while ago and thought it would be perfect.  I decided on a simple design, though I really struggled on this one.  My seam allowances really mattered on this one and nothing seemed to be matching up.  My final blocks were more than a 1/4 inch off.  I have never had this happen before, especially on some simple blocks.  I recently bought a new ruler and wonder if it is the culprit or if perhaps my guide on my 1/4 inch piecing foot is bent and off.  Needless to say it was a bit frustrating to have to square up each block and slice off 1/2 inch to get them to all match up.  I'll have to spend time time figuring out where my error was coming from, but in the meantime here are a few pictures.

The backing is the coordinating blue flannel print.

  1. What a wonderful quilt. Sorry to hear of your troubles with the seams, hope your figure out what was causing it soon!

  2. Oh my goodness. Camille is pregnant? SQUEAL! :) :) :) She is going to love this - I think you are BOTH intimidating for your skills. This is truly amazing. I am so impressed! Do you/have you thought of teaching quilting classes? I would really like to take one!

  3. Court, I can't believe they didn't tell you. She is 30 weeks. Jason isn't so good at passing along important info. I'd love to teach you to quilt. Maybe I need a trip to San Francisco without kids in the near future....

  4. Not only is your nephew going to love this quilt (I can see some serious blankie dragging in the future), but your sister-in-law will, too.

  5. Well it looks fantastic...I've been planning a similar wheels quilt but want to get some solids to add to the mix. It looks great with the brown.
